This problem has been fixed in iscan-data-1.8.0. Please upgrade. The information below is for reference purposes only.

We have received reports of fatal errors when update-initramfs is run with Image Scan! for Linux installed. The update-initramfs command is normally run as part of any upgrade of your Linux kernel package. It may also get run during udev and grub upgrades and possibly other packages as well.

This problem manifests itself with:

  • iscan-data versions 1.0.0 through 1.7.0
  • and initramfs-tools older than 0.86

In terms of distributions this means that:

  • Ubuntu 8.04 and older are affected. Version 8.10 and later are not.
  • Debian 4 and older are affected. Version 5 and later are not.
  • Linux Mint 5 and older are affected. Version 6 and later are not.
  • RPM based distributions normally do not use initramfs-tools.Distributions that do not use initramfs-tools are not affected.

You can work around the problem by renaming the iscan-data hook to iscan_data in the /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/ directory. Please rename the hook before you upgrade.

Systems with Image Scan! for Linux versions that do not require an iscan-data package are not affected.
