In the default status after installing the Ubuntu distribution, it is not possible to register printers using the CUPS Web interface for security reasons. In order to register your printer, please refer to [How to use the CUPS Web interface] and [How to use gnome-cups-manager] below.

[How to use the CUPS Web interface]
1. Add the cupsys user to the shadow group. Execute the following command from the terminal.
$ sudo adduser cupsys shadow

2. Add your user name to the lpadmin group.
$ sudo adduser lpadmin

3. Restart CUPS.
$ sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

4. Open the CUPS Web interface (enter http://localhost:631/ in your web browser) and register your printer.

[How to use gnome-cups-manager]
1. With root authority, in the GNOME menu select "System" - "Administration" - "Printing", or execute gnome-cups-manager from the command line.
2. When gnome-cups-manager starts, double click the "New Printer" icon and enter the required items in the Printer Install Wizard.

* For details, see the gnome-cups-manager help.

We have confirmed that this problem occurs with the following setup.

[Distribution]
Ubuntu 6.06
